The 2011 Maccabi tournament took place today at Heathrow Airport bowl and there was some excellent bowling on show. With the Maccabi GB team flying out to Vienna for the European Maccabi Games in around 6 weeks this was the perfect chance to get some practice in on similar lane conditions. After the success of last year’s change of format, everyone bowled 5 games qualifying with the top 8 scratch and the top 8 handicap bowlers making it through to separate knockout finals
There were some big games shot in the qualifying rounds including a 257 and 224 from Michael Loberman, a 237 and 232 from Gary Ellis, a 220 and 244 from Jack Nesbit, a 234 from Larry Handworker, a 238 from Ritchie Kneip and a 232 from Robin Bluston as well as many other 200+ games. Gary Ellis came out on top of the handicap qualifying pinfall with 1028 scratch (205 avg) – 1153 handicap – winning the Freddie Loberman memorial trophy. Just behind him was Jack Nesbit with 1011 scratch (202 avg) – 1141 handicap and third was Michael Loberman with 1042 scratch (208 avg) – 1122 handicap
Michael Loberman took the high game handicap award for his 257 scratch (273 handicap)
Then it got down to the serious business in the shape of the head to head best of 3 elimination matches
In the handicap section top seed Gary Nesbitt, son of Maccabiah player Jack, saw off former GB representatives Ian Davis and Paul Hart to secure his place in the final. There he would meet Maccabi veteran (he wont like me saying that) Geoff Isaacs who beat Paul Sassienie and first time Maccabi tournament player Craig Grant. In a close run thing, the experience of Isaacs was enough to see off Nesbitt in 2 games and Geoff took home the Russ Rubin Trophy. Paul Hart claimed 3rd place
In the scratch knockout section, Michael Loberman who qualified 1st found himself having to dig deep with a 236 game to see off Robin Bluston (223), and a 239 game to see off Larry Handworker (224) to make his way to the final. In the other side of the draw Gary Ellis saw off Teddy Littner before an outstanding showing of 257 and 277 in the semi final against Patrik Goldberg. So for the second year running, Michael and Gary would face each other in the final. In the first game Gary had no answer to Michael’s 258 game. The second game was very even and both players had strung 3 or 4 in a row together and entered the 9th and 10th frames with it all to play for. Gary struck out to force Michael to need to strike in the 10th. He duly obliged and took the final game down 234 vs 211 to successfully defend the title he claimed last year. An excellent final and an excellent day had by all

The 2010 Maccabi tournament took place today at Heathrow Airport bowl. The tournament welcomed its first International competitor with Patrick Goldberg from Sweden making the journey over to be re-united with some of the GB Maccabiah bowlers from last summer
The tournament format was changed for this year to make it more competitive for everyone. Everyone bowled 5 games qualifying with the top 8 scratch and the top 8 handicap bowlers making it through to separate knockout finals
Maurice Baum had the highest handicap pinfall after the first 5 games qualifying shooting 1029 scratch (205 avg) – 1229 handicap. Maurice therefore took home the Freddie Loberman Memorial Trophy. 2nd in the handicap standings was Michael Loberman with a 1071 scratch (214 avg) – 1151 handicap. 3rd was Patrick who ensured his journey over from Sweden was not in vain with a 978 scratch (195 avg) – 1138 handicap.
Gary Ellis, a Maccabi GB player took the handicap high game award with a storming last game of 256 scratch, 276 handicap
Next came the knockout finals where competitors went head to head with each other in best of 3 matches.
In the handicap section quarter final Teddy Littner saw his way through to the final by beating Richard Kniep and Paul Hart. His opponent for the final was Paul Freedman who disposed of previous Maccabi GB representatives Matt Plax and Ricky Cohen to get there. With only two pins separating them in their handicap it was essentially a scratch final which Teddy took 2 games to nothing to become the winner of the inaugural Russ Rubin Trophy. Ricky Cohen beat Paul Hart in the 3rd / 4th playoff
In the scratch knockout section, Michael Loberman who qualified 1st saw off Bradley Mervish and then Ian Davis to claim a place in the final. Gary Ellis, a team mate of Michael’s in last years Maccabiah fought his way through the other half of the draw and with some great scores saw off Jack Nesbit and Maurice Baum to face Michael in the final. In the first game Gary continued where he left off shooting a 246 which Michael had no reply to. However Michael fought back taking the 2nd game 244 to 201, which set up a final game decider for the title. With both players throwing a good shot it really was anyone’s game but Michael’s momentum carried him through to take the final game 257 to 209 and be crowned the winner of the 2010 Maccabi tournament.

The new season of the Maccabi League rolled off on 7th September 2010. After a summer off it was back to business at Dunstable. Results can be found on the league results page or by clicking here
As the Maccabi league entered the final round this week, the top 2 teams were neck and neck with only pinfall separating them. With Little and Large taking the first game 4-0, the Sasseienies fought back to take the second game by the same score. Going into the last it was all to play for but the Sassienies held their nerve to take the final game 3-1 and win the match 11-5 meaning they are the new Maccabi league champions!
Congratulations to all who took part in the league this season. It was definitely a lot of fun and great to see a lot of the final places went down to the last week. We look forward to welcoming you back next season

P.S. I know the games for the last round underneath the league table look wrong for PLS, LUA, Thomas Cookies and Chu Chi but rest assured I have manually adjusted the points tally so that everyone ended with the amount of points they should have
The 13th European Maccabi Games will be taking place in the Austrian capital Vienna from 5 – 13 July 2011. Following Team England’s success in Rome in 2007, all eyes will be on the tenpin bowling team to lead the medal haul once again.

The Maccabi Australia International Games, or MAIGs as it is known, will take place in Sydney, Australia from 26 December 2010 until 2 January 2011. Many of the sports facilities will be those used in the Sydney Olympics and accommodation will be in a hotel near Bondi Beach. Australia expect there to be delegations from over 15 countries from across the world with around 700 participants.
Tenpin Bowling will be one of the sports taking place. At this stage, the price looks like being in the region of £2,500 for the week. At this stage, Maccabi GB are simply assessing interest levels. Whilst it sounds like alot of money, you have around fifteen months to save or raise the cash, so more than enough time. Hearing first hand from the Australians at the Maccabiah Games, the MAIGs is supposed to be a fantastic event.

The 2009/2010 Maccabi GB Tenpin Bowling League commences on Tuesday 8th September 2009 at 8:30pm. The league will once again be held every Tuesday night at GoBowling in Dunstable. As per last season, the format is a doubles handicap league and teams can register up to 5 players per squad.
Mixed male/female teams are more than welcome as are bowlers of ALL ABILITIES. It is a fun and enjoyable league and we are looking to increase the number of teams from the 13 teams that competed last year. As the Maccabiah Games draw to a close tonight, we shall miss the friendships that have been formed these past two weeks, and those that have been renewed (but we shall not miss the Galil Hotel in Netanya or the food that they served!).
It has been an amazing two weeks, if only it could have been topped off with a medal or two. We’ll be back in four years time to give it another go.
