The official re-launch of Maccabi GB Tenpin Bowling took place at Airport Bowl last Sunday with 43 bowlers taking part in the first national tournament in several years. Bowlers from as far a field as Manchester and Leeds travelled down to Heathrow to vie for the honour of being crowned Jewish national champion. With the tournament also counting towards qualification for Team England at the forthcoming European Maccabi Games in Rome, some particularly high scores were expected and both the bowlers and spectators were not to be disappointed.

The day kicked off with a five game handicap series, with bowlers using their highest averages from their own bowling leagues. The committee’s Vice-Chairman, Paul Loberman, set an extremely high standard in the first game by rolling a 264 scratch game, which was followed by a further three games above 215. The scoreboard at the end of the handicap series was dominated by the Loberman family with Paul finishing in first place with a scratch average of 226, followed by brother Michael in second place on 203 and cousin Jamie in third on 189. Richard Kneip won the high handicap game with an impressive score of 272. Special mention must also be made of Dean Caplin, the youngest competitor at 14 years old, who bowled admirably.

In the women’s competition, Ruth Daich finished in eighth position overall, winning the handicap series with a 180 scratch average, and in the process being the only woman to qualify for the round robin tournament, a truly superb achievement. Linda Isaacs and Ruth Stander finished second and third respectively. Linda also won the ladies high handicap game.

The top ten bowlers then went through to compete in a ten game scratch round robin tournament. The standard of competition was very strong with each bowler scoring high games of between 201 and 256. At the end of the final round, 23 year old Maccabiah bowler Gary Ellis just pipped 75 year old veteran Frank Stander into third place with Michael Loberman finishing in second. However, the deserved winner and 2006 national champion was Paul Loberman, finishing clear in front with a brilliant average of 217 over 15 games.

Recently elected Chairman, Matthew Plax remarked, “The number of entrants truly exceeded our expectations. This was a fantastic opportunity for Jewish bowlers to get together and it was great to see some old faces and many new ones. The future of Maccabi tenpin bowling looks very bright, and the committee will ensure that we take the strongest possible team to Rome next year, and then to Israel in 2009.”
